Breather was founded by Caterina Rizzi and Julian Smith, the company's CEO. The idea came from Smith when he traveled and found himself working in various coffee shops. Smith is author of three books and often traveled for public speaking events.〔 He founded the company as a way to let people find a quiet space.〔 In September 2014, the company raised $6.5 million in Series A funding, bringing its total to $7.5 as of that date.〔 The company raised $27 million in Series B funding in 2015, with $20 million led by Valar Ventures. Breather had a soft launch in Montreal before expanding to New York City.〔 By April 2015 the company expanded to a total of five cities, including Boston and San Francisco.
